Comets on Parade: Two Icy Visitors This Halloween

Imagine something so big, it wraps around the entire solar system. That's the Oort Cloud, a vast shell of icy bodies that's theoretically present but invisible to us. Astronomers suspect it exists because it explains the sudden appearances of certain comets. This October, we're getting a special treat with two comets passing by Earth. First up is Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, also known as Comet C/2023 A3. It’ll be at its brightest around October 12, and should be visible to the naked eye in the western sky after sunset for a couple of weeks. As time passes, the comet will fade and move higher in the sky.

Next, just in time for Halloween, we have Comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS), recently discovered on September 27. This one will be closest to Earth on October 24, visible low in the eastern sky before sunrise. After a dance with the Sun, it might pop back up in the west around Halloween. But be warned, close encounters with the Sun can make comets break apart.
