Companies That Outlived Nations
Montreal, Chicago, Canada, USASunday, June 7, 2026
State Street, another long-lasting firm, shows how focus wins over time. Started in 1792, it never spread itself too thin. Instead, it focused on being the best in financial services for 250 years. As Joerg Ambrosius, a top executive there, puts it: "We do a few things well, and we do them better than anyone else. " That simple strategy has kept the company strong for generations.
Insurance companies like Cigna and The Hartford also made the list, lasting centuries by solving real problems. Cigna began by insuring ships full of goods in the 1700s. Today, it helps people with health care instead. The company’s CEO, David Cordani, says their mission never changed—protecting people when they need it most. That long-term vision kept them relevant even as the world changed around them.
So why do some companies thrive for centuries while others vanish in a decade? Two things matter most: choosing the right business and having leaders who plan ahead. The rest is just time—and a bit of luck.
