Connecting Boulder’s Art Scenes with a Bus‑Powered Night

Boulder Colorado USA,Thursday, July 2, 2026

Boulder is turning its separate First Friday art nights into a single, city‑wide adventure.
Instead of walking from one neighborhood to another on foot, organizers are lining up two existing bus lines – the HOP that loops through downtown and University Hill, and the SKIP that runs along Broadway into North Boulder.

  • Schedule:
  • 4 p.m.: Board the HOP, explore downtown galleries until 7.
  • 7 p.m.: Transfer to the SKIP and finish the evening in NoBo by 9.

The idea is to use public transit as a bridge between two vibrant art districts that have, until now, largely stayed in their own corners.

Funding & Goals

  • $8,500 grant from the city’s Boulder Vision program.
  • Money goes to the Chamber Foundation’s “Transportation Connections” effort, aiming to shift people from cars to buses.
  • By making travel between downtown and NoBo easy, artists reach new audiences and local businesses see a boost.

The initiative isn’t a fancy art shuttle; it’s the regular HOP and SKIP buses, enhanced with extra promotion and a few free tickets handed out to anyone who takes a quick survey on the night of July 3.

The Two Districts

  • NoBo First Fridays (since 2009) – dozens of galleries, studios, and artist‑run spaces along Broadway; a behind‑the‑scenes look at art creation.
  • Downtown First Fridays (started last year) – centered on Pearl Street, geared more toward shoppers and diners.

Organizers want to blur the line between these events so visitors can experience both sides in one evening.

Route & Activities

  • 25 stops mapped, each featuring live music, exhibitions, and interactive art.
  • Downtown highlights: Velvet Elk, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.
  • NoBo highlights: New Local studio walk‑throughs, live set by DJ San Juan.

The bus route is straightforward: park once, take the HOP downtown, then hop on the SKIP north and walk through NoBo. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for anyone with a transit pass – or one who can buy a single ride on the day – to join in.

Vision

The project isn’t about turning NoBo into an extension of downtown; it’s about giving each district its own character while allowing people to experience both.

  • NoBo: intimacy and the chance to see artists in action.
  • Downtown: polished, commercial vibe.

By linking them, the hope is that each neighborhood’s strengths shine brighter when seen together.

First Night & Future

  • The first night will test the plan’s effectiveness.
  • A Chamber transportation office team member will hand out free tickets and gather feedback on cross‑district trips.
  • If successful, the city could make this a regular event, strengthening Boulder’s art community.
