Could Diabetes Drug Ozempic Shield Against Alzheimer's Too?
Ohio, USAThursday, October 24, 2024
But what's the big deal about semaglutide? Well, Alzheimer’s has no cure. Current treatments approved by the FDA target amyloid plaques in the brain but come with serious side effects and high costs. If semaglutide proves effective, it could be the first preventive treatment.
Experts think semaglutide might protect the brain by fighting inflammation and other risk factors for dementia. But they also warn that more research is needed before we can say for sure. After all, early studies on statins and other drugs suggested they could help, but those promises didn't pan out.
The drug company Novo Nordisk is currently running clinical trials to see if semaglutide can slow down Alzheimer’s. Results are expected next year. If positive, it could open a new door in treating this devastating disease.
