You might be surprised to learn that fish oil supplements could help lower the risk of cancer, according to a new study. Researchers found that people with higher levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in their bodies had lower rates of various cancers, such as colon, stomach, and lung cancer. Omega-3s come from fatty fish and certain plant-based oils, but many people take fish oil supplements to ensure they get enough. These fatty acids can also be found in nuts. Interestingly, the benefits were seen even after accounting for other cancer risk factors like body weight and physical activity. However, higher omega-3 levels might slightly increase the risk of prostate cancer in men. So, while it's a promising find, it's not a guaranteed solution for everyone.

Experts from the University of Georgia led this study, using data from over 253, 000 participants in the UK Biobank research project. Participants filled out dietary questionnaires and had their health tracked over many years. Out of these people, nearly 30, 000 developed some form of cancer. The study was published in the International Journal of Cancer.

It's important to note that while the findings suggest that adding more of these fatty acids to our diets could be beneficial, we shouldn't rely on fish oil supplements alone for cancer prevention. A balanced diet and regular check-ups are still crucial.
