Could Ivermectin and Doxycycline Team Up to Fight COVID-19?

Recent studies have sparked a new interest in using a combination of two common drugs, ivermectin and doxycycline, to tackle the COVID-19 virus. By employing advanced computer simulations, researchers have shown that these drugs could potentially hinder the virus' main protease, $3CL^{pro}$. This protease is crucial for the virus to replicate and spread within the body. Previously, many therapies have been tested, both individually and in combinations, but finding a specific cure continues to be a challenge. In this work, scientists used in silico molecular docking and dynamic simulations to observe how these drugs interact with the $3CL^{pro}$ protease. They found that ivermectin and doxycycline, either alone or together, show promise as potential drugs to combat SARS-CoV-2 infections.

The two drugs, ivermectin and doxycycline, are readily available and known for their antiviral properties. By focusing on $3CL^{pro}$ as a primary target, researchers believe they could interrupt the virus's ability to make more copies of itself.
