Could Trump's Plans Shake Up the Education Department?
USATuesday, January 21, 2025
Trump’s core idea is to move education control back to the states. This means some DOE jobs would go to other federal agencies, like the Justice and Health Departments. Some experts think this could lead to unfair funding among states. Wealthier states might do well, but poorer ones might struggle. Trump also wants to give schools extra money if they pay teachers based on performance and cut some diversity programs. He even wants parents to elect school principals. Plus, he plans to let parents use public funds to send their kids to any school they like, not just the one in their neighborhood.
Civil rights could also see big changes. Trump wants to undo a rule that protects transgender students. Some responsibilities could shift to the Justice Department. But closing the DOE isn't easy. Trump needs a lot of support in Congress, including a supermajority in the Senate. In 2023, many Republicans actually voted against an attempt to close the department. Only time will tell if Trump can make his plan a reality.
