Cranford's Green Push: 85 New Trees to Boost the Town's Canopy
Cranford is taking significant steps to retain its prestigious "Tree City USA" designation. This week, the town is set to add 85 new trees to its streets and parks, led by the dedicated Shade Tree Commission, a volunteer-driven group.
The Shade Tree Commission's Role
The Shade Tree Commission consists of nine members who oversee all tree-related decisions in Cranford. Their responsibilities include ensuring proper planting and maintenance of trees. Over the past two years, they have planted over 300 trees and have plans to remove old tree stumps.
Investing in a Greener Future
The town is allocating funds to ensure the health and longevity of its trees. This initiative is part of Cranford's commitment to maintaining its green spaces and enhancing the town's beauty.
Requirements for "Tree City USA"
The "Tree City USA" title, awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation, requires towns to meet specific criteria:
- Have a tree board
- Allocate funds for tree planting and maintenance
- Celebrate Arbor Day
Cranford earned this title last year by planting 111 trees and establishing a tree nursery. This year, they are on track to surpass that number, having already planted 125 trees. The upcoming 85 new trees will further contribute to this goal.
Ensuring Quality and Compliance
The Shade Tree Commission is meticulous about maintaining standards. Only their designated tree crew is authorized to work on township trees. Residents are not permitted to hire outside help for this purpose. For any inquiries, the Shade Tree Superintendent is available for contact.
