Crime Concerns Divide Black and White Americans
USATuesday, October 22, 2024
Public opinion varies on what's driving crime. Some blame illegal drugs, others a lack of morals or mental health facilities. Crime policy could influence the upcoming presidential election, with 70% of Americans saying it's an important voting issue. In 2019, Black Americans, who make up 12. 2% of the U. S. population, were arrested at a higher rate, making up 26. 6% of total arrests. Some experts see these statistics as proof of racial bias in the justice system.
Violent crime has declined since the pandemic but remains a key issue for political candidates. In a survey, 43% trusted Vice President Harris more on crime, while 40% preferred former President Trump.
