Ivry-sur‑Seine Town Hall Clash Over Religious Symbols

A heated debate erupted in the Ivry‑sur‑Seine town hall when Councilor Kevin Nader of the National Rally party proposed a rule to ban religious symbols from official meetings. The move threatened to strip away items such as hijabs worn by some council members.

When Mayor Philippe Bouyssou of the Communist Party declined to put the proposal to a vote, Nader reacted dramatically. He raised a wooden cross and recited a prayer, proclaiming that the council would henceforth operate under its symbol and wishing everyone God’s blessings.

Mayor Bouyssou immediately condemned the act as a “political crime,” accusing Nader of disrespecting secular principles and insulting the local Christian community. The incident underscores a growing tension between religious expression and the principle of secularism in French local governance.
