The Forest Lake Police Department reported that over the past two years, victims have lost more than $300, 000 in schemes involving these machines. But this is likely just the tip of the iceberg, as many scams go unreported. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has seen a similar trend, with reported losses increasing nearly tenfold since 2020, reaching over $110 million in 2023.

The city has a few options. They could do nothing, create an ordinance to regulate the ATMs, or ban them outright. The proposed ordinance would require a fee for having a crypto ATM, along with cameras and signage to deter fraud. This isn't a small decision, and it's one that the city will be discussing at their next meeting on March 24th. But should cities be stepping in to regulate crypto ATMs?
