Crypto Cash Helps Young Democrat Win Big Seat

Adrian Boafo, a 32‑year‑old from Maryland, won the Democratic nomination for a long‑time seat in the U. S. House after a tough primary against about 24 rivals. The district leans strongly Democratic, so Boafo is almost certain to win the November election. Boafo’s campaign was backed by more than $10 million in outside money. Two groups that spent the most were a crypto‑friendly super PAC called Protect Progress and another linked to AIPAC, the pro‑Israel lobby. The money helped him stand out in a crowded field. He also had support from key local leaders. Former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, and the teachers union all endorsed him. Hoyer had represented this district for 45 years before announcing his retirement in January, which opened the race.

The other candidates included former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who focused on opposition to President Trump and the Jan. 6 events; former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, who had run for governor twice; and businesswoman Quincy Bareebe. Dunn was endorsed by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but he did not win. Boafo’s victory shows how large outside donations can shape a primary. The crypto and pro‑Israel groups poured money into his campaign, while the establishment leaders gave him political muscle. With no strong Republican opponent expected in the general election, Boafo’s win is likely a formality.
