Crypto Scam Alert: Hackers Pretend to Be Investors to Steal Millions

Ever heard of the North Korean hacker group, Lazarus? They're back with a new trick, the FBI says. After stealing billions in crypto, they're now pretending to be venture capitalists to target startup CEOs. In November 2023, they fooled a crypto startup's CEO using a fake Telegram account. They sent a script file to fix a supposed video call issue, but it was a sneaky malware called CryptoMimic. This gave them access to private keys for crypto tokens worth over $17 million.

They even deleted the file with the keys to cover their tracks. The FBI linked this to servers in North Korea and froze some of the stolen tokens on Binance and MEXC. But what happened to the rest of the missing $17 million? The FBI warned that North Korean hackers are getting smarter with their social engineering tactics. They've even pretended to be job seekers or recruiters in the past. So, be careful who you trust online!
