Crystal Bridges Expands, Opens New Doors to American Art

Bentonville, Arkansas, USATuesday, June 16, 2026

Crystal Bridges in Bentonville has grown by 50 %, adding 114,000 square feet of fresh galleries, studios, and an elevated café. The expansion intertwines art, architecture, and the surrounding Ozark woods more tightly than ever.

A Vision for Broader Perspectives

“We want to offer multiple ways into a work of art,” says Austen Barron Bailly, deputy director of curatorial affairs.
The new rooms let visitors experience pieces from different angles and contexts, broadening the way American art is perceived.

Spotlight on Contemporary Creativity

  • Keith Haring 3‑D Hall
A brand‑new, 14,000‑square‑foot hall will debut a three‑dimensional rendition of Haring’s work. Bailly notes that his unmistakable style, coupled with a message about art being public and lively, aligns perfectly with the museum’s goal of integrating contemporary pieces into everyday life.

Architecture Meets Landscape

Safdie Architects, who designed the original building, linked the new pavilions to ravines, trails, and ponds encircling the site. Visitors transition from gallery to landscape seamlessly, creating an intuitive journey from outside into the heart of the museum.

Beyond Exhibits: Supporting Artists

The expansion includes:

  • Artist residencies
  • Ongoing support for creative practice

Bailly believes that artists help people imagine the unnamed, turning creativity into hope and resilience for the public.

A New Narrative

With rooms that can display craft, Indigenous art, and traditional pieces side by side, the museum reshapes its narrative. The expansion challenges old hierarchies and presents a fuller picture of American creativity, offering audiences curiosity, possibility, and a deeper bond with the art on display.
