Cuban Boat Incident Sparks U. S. and Cuban Tension

The Cuban coast guard stopped a speedboat that had come from Florida near the El Pino canal. The boat carried weapons and a crew of ten Cuban nationals who lived in the U. S. When Cuban border guards asked for identification, shots were fired from the boat. The guard commander was hurt but survived. Four people on the speedboat were killed and six others were injured. The wounded were taken to a hospital for treatment. Cuba says the crew had rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails and camouflage gear. They claim the group planned a terrorist attack on Cuban soil. All ten crew members were said to have histories of crime and violence. The ministry named one victim, Michel Ortega Casanova, and listed six arrested men. A seventh man, Duniel Hernández Santos, was also detained in Cuba and has admitted to helping the group.

The U. S. government has not confirmed these identities or motives. U. S. officials say they are investigating the incident. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said U. S. agencies are looking into whether any crew members were U. S. citizens or legal residents. Vice President JD Vance said the White House is watching the situation closely. Florida officials are also involved. Attorney General James Uthmeier ordered state prosecutors to work with federal partners on the case. Representative María Elvira Salazar and Representative Carlos Giménez expressed concern about the use of lethal force. Representative Adriano Espaillat said more details will be shared soon. Cuba reiterated its commitment to protecting its waters. The incident has raised questions about security and international law.
