Cyclops Parasite Surge Hits Maryland Hard

Maryland, USAThursday, July 16, 2026
The state health department reports a sharp rise in infections caused by the cyclops parasite, with cases more than doubling last week. Doctors warn that this bug can trigger severe stomach problems lasting days or even weeks, producing watery diarrhea, bloating, cramps, extreme tiredness and a loss of appetite. The latest update shows 69 confirmed cases in the state, up from 32 earlier, and most of these were recorded between May 1 and July 14. This spike mirrors a nationwide summer outbreak that has already sickened thousands. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still trying to find the root cause, but experts suspect that contaminated irrigation water can splash onto fresh produce. Because symptoms often take a week to show up, tracking the exact source is difficult.
In Maryland, officials note that infection numbers tend to climb during the summer season, especially from May through August. The state recorded 128 cases in 2025 and 204 in 2024, with a similar trend of rising numbers each year. To protect themselves, people should practice basic food safety: wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly or heat them to at least 158°F (70°C) before eating. These steps can kill the parasite and reduce the risk of infection. The health department urges residents to stay alert, report symptoms early, and follow recommended safety measures to curb the spread of this parasite.
