Czech Government Announces Delay in NATO Defence Spending Target
The Czech government has announced that it will not hit the NATO defence spending target this year. Prime Minister Andrej Babis said the country aims to meet the 2% of GDP goal from 2027 onward.
- Current Year:
- Defence budget set at 1.7 – 1.8% of GDP
Officially a temporary measure
- Previous Administration:
- Spent < 2% of GDP on defence last year
Rationale:
Babis explained that the government must first stabilize public finances. “We will not reach 2% of GDP for defence this year,” he posted on Facebook, citing the need to balance the budget.- Other Budget Changes:
- Increased subsidies for energy prices
- Funded new road construction projects
Result: Overall budget deficit rises compared to earlier proposals
- NATO Targets:
- Long‑term goal: 5% of GDP by 2035 (3.5% on core military spending)
- Babis remains confident that the country can reach 2% of GDP next year as part of a sustained plan aligned with security needs and alliance commitments.
