Dallas Nonprofits Step In: Saving Lives During Icy Weather

In the heart of Dallas, the temperature plummeted, and nonprofits were quick to respond. Organizations like OurCalling and Austin Street Center sprang into action, setting up shelters and transporting people to safety. Take Sandy Huudang, for instance. She lives in her car and was ready to brave the cold, but a bright green van and a warm smile changed her mind. Brandon Wallace, from OurCalling, offered her a ride to a temporary shelter at Fair Park. Sandy sang a tune from her car, excited for the warmth inside. These nonprofits work tirelessly, even when people refuse help. They understand that living outside in freezing weather is risky. They try to convince people to come in, but sometimes, they just leave a number and a prayer. The city has authorized shelters with over 1, 500 cots, and hundreds have already been checked in.

Daniel Roby, CEO of Austin Street Center, calls this a team effort. The city, nonprofits, and even volunteers all pitch in. But they need more help. Families facing eviction, like one teenager shivering in a T-shirt, also need a place to stay.
