The Dallas Zoo is gearing up for the icy weather headed their way. After a tough winter storm in 2021 left a third of the park without power, they've learned their lesson. Nine new generators are ready to kick in if needed, keeping the animals cozy. Staff will be doing overnight checks to make sure everything's running smoothly.
Animals like alpacas, who love the cold, will stay outdoors. But little critters from warmer places, like South American primates, will have indoor spaces to retreat to. Heating solutions, like lamps and pads, will keep everyone toasty. There's even a plan for staff to stay overnight during bad weather, so the animals get the care they need.
The zoo crews are trained and ready. They know how to keep the generators and heaters going, and how to place those heat lamps just right. Paths are treated with sand and ice-melters to keep visitors safe too. If the weather gets really bad, the zoo might delay opening or close its doors until it's safe again.
