Dancers’ Hidden Struggles: What Makes Them Vulnerable
Saturday, June 6, 2026
First, personal traits—things inside the dancer such as a need to be perfect, low self‑worth, and not liking their own body—are the most common culprits. Other personal traits like age or gender showed mixed results and were less reliable as predictors.
Second, outside influences—what happens in the dance world—also matter. How teachers act and whether dancers have faced trauma can increase their risk, though these factors were studied less often.
The study suggests that both personal and environmental aspects play a role in dancers’ mental health. By identifying these risks, coaches and therapists can create better support plans for those in the dance community.
