Danger in the Wild: Rabies Cases Rise Across Four Virginia Counties

Virginia, USAFriday, July 10, 2026
In early 2026, wildlife officials in Virginia recorded several rabies-positive animals across four counties. The cases were found in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Orange, showing that the disease is still a real threat in local ecosystems. The first county to report an infection was Culpeper, where a bat and a skunk tested positive. Fauquier added three raccoons and another skunk to the list, making it one of the most affected areas. Madison had a single skunk case, while Orange reported both a cat and a skunk with the virus.
Despite these findings, no human exposures have been reported so far. Still, health experts warn that the presence of rabies in wildlife is common in Virginia, especially among raccoons, skunks and bats. In the first quarter of the year alone, 117 animals statewide were confirmed to carry the disease. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District urges residents to avoid contact with wild animals and unfamiliar pets. They also remind pet owners to keep their dogs and cats fully vaccinated against rabies. If an animal behaves oddly, people should contact local animal control immediately. Keeping the community informed and vigilant can help prevent future outbreaks and protect both people and animals from this deadly virus.
