De Anza College's PE Complex Gets a Big Upgrade
De Anza College is finally giving its old physical education complex a much-needed makeover. The plan? A $53 million renovation that's been in the works for years. The state is footing most of the bill, covering 75% of the cost, while the rest comes from the district's savings and bond funds.
The Current State of the Complex
The complex, built back in 1967, has some serious issues:
- Seismic safety concerns
- Accessibility problems
- Hazardous materials
- Outdated building codes
The renovation will tackle all of these and more. It will cover a huge area, including spaces for:
- Physical education
- Lectures
- Offices
The pool area, though, will stay as is.
What's New?
But it's not just about fixing what's broken. The upgrade will also bring in new tech:
- Multimedia for hybrid classes
- Automated equipment for training
- Emergency systems like:
- Lighting
- Lockdowns
- Fire alarms
Timeline and Planning
Construction won't start until 2027 and will take about two years. Before that, the project team will meet with stakeholders to get input on what's needed. The goal? To make the complex safer, more modern, and ready for the future.
