Deadly Gas Emissions in Texas Oilfields: A Toxic Legacy
Caldwell County, Luling, Texas, USAFriday, September 20, 2024
The study, published in Environmental Research Communications, revealed that 46 wells in Caldwell County were emitting hydrogen sulfide at alarming levels. Concentrations at 13 wells exceeded 300 parts per million (ppm), the maximum reading on the measuring device. Exposure to 100 ppm is immediately dangerous to life or health, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
The findings are a stark reminder of the need for regulation and accountability in the oil industry. While oil companies are required to adopt protocols to protect workers from hydrogen sulfide, the general public is often exposed to low-level concentrations, which can have long-term health effects.
