Deadly Mosquito-Borne Virus Claims Life in New Hampshire: What You Need to Know

A rare but deadly viral disease, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), has claimed the life of a New Hampshire man after he was bitten by an infected mosquito. This tragic event marks the state's first reported case of EEE since 2014. With the risk of infection remaining high until the first hard frost, it is crucial to understand the symptoms, risks, and preventative measures associated with this disease. EEE is a viral illness transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Although rare, the disease can be severe, causing death in approximately 30% of cases and leaving many survivors with ongoing neurological problems. Common symptoms include fever, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, drowsiness, and behavioral changes.

In the United States, EEE cases are uncommon, with most occurring in eastern states or along the Gulf Coast. The worst outbreak in recent history took place in 2019, when 38 people were diagnosed, and half of them died. Currently, no vaccines or medications are available to prevent or treat EEE. The only effective defense is to avoid mosquito bites. As the risk of EEE remains high in New Hampshire and other regions, it is essential to take precautions when spending time outdoors.
