Deadly Ottoman Bed: A Tragic Mishap

In June, a 39-year-old mother from northeast England, Helen Davey, died in an unexpected tragedy. While Helen was in her bedroom, a fold-away ottoman bed suddenly closed, trapping her neck and cutting off her breath. Her 19-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, found her in this dire situation and struggled to lift the heavy bed to free her mom. The bed's gas-lift hydraulics, which were supposed to make it easy to open and close, had malfunctioned. This type of bed is popular for the hidden storage it offers under the mattress, but in Helen's case, it turned into a deadly trap.

The coroner, Jeremy Chipperfield, reported that the bed's mechanism failing could pose a risk to others unless it's addressed. He even warned the British Business Secretary about the danger. It's crucial to know that even everyday items can sometimes turn dangerous. In 2022, 18 people in the UK died from strangulation or suffocation in bed. Helen's death was ruled an accident, and regulatory officials have until December to respond to the coroner's recommendation.
