DeKalb's Green Business Recognition Program: A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

DeKalb is taking a big step towards a greener future with its new Green Business Recognition Program. This initiative aims to celebrate and encourage local businesses that are making efforts to be more environmentally friendly. The program is set to launch in early 2026 and will focus on seven key areas:

Energy
Waste and Recycling
Office and Purchasing
Transportation
Stewardship
Outreach and Engagement
Innovation

Program Details

Businesses of all sizes can participate, from small offices to larger employers. The program is designed to recognize and expand the sustainability actions already taking place in the DeKalb business community.

Key Actions and Points

Energy: Businesses using LED lighting, energy-efficient equipment, or renewable electricity can earn points.
Waste & Recycling: Actions like reducing single-use plastics and shifting to digital documents can help businesses score.

How It Works

Complete a Scorecard: Participating businesses complete a scorecard available on the City of DeKalb website.
Earn Points: Businesses can earn points for sustainability actions already in place and submit brief supporting documentation.
Review and Recognition: The DeKalb Citizens’ Environmental Commission (CEC) will review the submissions and assign one of three recognition tiers: Platinum, Gold, or Silver.

Benefits of Recognition

Recognized businesses will receive:

A certificate
A window decal for display
Recognition on the CEC website
Opportunities to engage with the community, such as participating in the 3rd Annual DeKalb County Earth Fest.
