Delayed Alexa Update: What Went Wrong?

Amazon's plan to upgrade Alexa, its popular voice assistant, has hit a snag. The new version, promised to be smarter and more chatty, won't be here until 2025. This isn't the first delay — it was supposed to arrive this year. An inside source told Bloomberg that the team was informed about the new deadline recently. The new Alexa was advertised to be like ChatGPT, handling complex conversations. But earlier reports suggested it might never be ready. Amazon even skipped its usual fall event for the first time in five years, adding to the delay rumors. To make things worse, Amazon stopped the beta testing for the new Alexa. Before, you could try it by saying "Alexa, let's chat" to an Echo device. Now, Alexa responds with a message saying "Let's Chat is no longer available. " Those who did test it weren't impressed. The responses were slow and not very helpful, and the new Alexa messed up smart home tasks. It even tried to show off with unnecessary extra information, like when asked about a Super Bowl halftime show, it would go on about a wardrobe malfunction.

The issue seems to be combining big language models with the current voice command system. The new Alexa can answer tough questions but struggles with simple tasks like setting a timer or controlling lights. The current Alexa might have flaws, but it can handle daily tasks like turning on lights. Amazon's CEO, Andy Jassy, hasn't clearly explained the vision for this new Alexa. He mentioned re-architecting Alexa's brain, but there's little detail on how it will benefit users. Amazon also needs to prove it can improve Alexa without losing its current useful features. While Amazon figures out its plan, Jassy has brought in a new head for the devices and services division, Panos Panay. He's been with the company for a year and is known for his focus on high-quality design.
