Demand for Justice: Prosecutors Allegedly Punished for Upholding Law

Two prosecutors, Nancy Theberge and Brock Lunsford, found themselves in a tough spot. They were both transferred out of the resentencing unit in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. According to their legal claims they were targeted. The reason? They supported the Menendez brothers' resentencing and were allegedly tied to George Gascón, the former District Attorney. Menendez brothers were convicted of their parents' murder in 1989, then sentenced to life in prison without parole. Despite this, The prosecutors argued that the brothers' sentences should be reconsidered. Nancy Theberge gave an interesting angle. She claimed that she was treated differently because of her age and gender. Her boss had treated her unfairly compared to her younger, male colleagues. She believed this undermined her role and influence. This didn't sit well and this was a something to consider. The prosecutors brought this issue up in October 2024. They demanded that the court consider the Menendez brothers' resentencing. Their work, a memorandum on the legal grounds and the need for the brothers' resentencing, was critical. The claims unearthed that there was more than one reason they were targeted. The new District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, had an issue with them because they openly supported his political opponent. They had supported George Gascón, the former DA, and his reelection bid. They had openly supported George Gascón.

The prosecutors focused on why the brothers' resentencing was important. Neither prosecutor was impressed with the outcome. Theberge was moved to the Alternative Public Defender's Office and given a lower position. This was a clear demotion. Lunsford, who previously had supervisory responsibilities, was stripped of them and moved to a lower position as a calendar attorney in the Norwalk Courthouse. He had no chance of promotion or advancement. He had no chance, he was stuck. There was a lot that was not said. The prosecutors filed government claims. They wanted compensation for the damage done. They were looking for over $250, 000 in economic damages and over $5 million in non-economic damages. This was a large sum but deserved. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office didn't comment. They chose not to say anything at all. The menendez brothers' case is big news. Last year, two Hollywood projects about them were released, including a Netflix crime series and a documentary. This case is huge! A judge will ultimately decide if the brothers' sentences will be reduced. Lawyers for the brothers want their sentences reduced to 50 years to life. This would mean they could be eligible for parole right away.
