DirecTV is shifting gears with the launch of a free, ad-supported TV streaming service called MyFree DirecTV. This service will offer a mix of content that isn't typically found in their premium packages. The new platform will be available online, on mobile devices, and on select smart TVs and streaming devices nationwide.

The initial lineup includes Fox Weather, reruns of "Duck Dynasty," SportsGrid for sports betting coverage, and Lionsgate's MovieSphere with movies like "3:10 to Yuma" and "Ender's Game." Food and lifestyle channel Tastemade and Latino network El Rey Rebel are also part of the mix, along with PokerGo, Ebony TV, and Nosey, which streams daytime shows like "The Steve Wilkos Show" and "Jerry Springer."

DirecTV plans to add more channels in 2025 and promises both linear and on-demand content. This move aims to create new advertising opportunities and entice users to upgrade to paid TV services. Notably, DirecTV recently raised rates for both satellite TV and streaming subscribers.

The free service is designed to be a starting point for users, offering popular content genres like sports, entertainment, kids' shows, news, and lifestyle. DirecTV's Your TV content aggregation carousel will also be integrated, providing users with a personalized TV experience.

This launch comes at a strategic time, as DirecTV recently acquired Dish Network to become the largest provider in the declining pay-TV industry. MyFree DirecTV will compete against other free, ad-supported services like Pluto TV and Tubi.

“DirecTV aims to create a brighter TV future with more choice and control for consumers,” said Amy Leifer, chief advertising sales officer at DirecTV. “We’re focused on empowering our advertising clients to reach new audiences effectively.” Kent Rees, an industry veteran, joined DirecTV to lead MyFree DirecTV, bringing extensive experience from Sling TV and other media companies.

By entering the FAST market, DirecTV hopes to boost its advertising potential and attract new viewers who might later upgrade to their paid services.
