Disney and ABC Under Fire for Diversity Policies
USASaturday, March 29, 2025
The investigation is based on reports about Disney's efforts to increase diversity. One report mentioned the creation of racially-segregated affinity groups and spaces within the company. Additionally, Disney has set mandatory inclusion standards. These standards require that at least half of regular and recurring characters in their productions come from underrepresented groups. Executive bonuses are also tied to meeting these DEI goals. This policy has been criticized for potentially forcing racial and identity quotas at every level of production.
ABC is also under scrutiny for its use of race-based hiring databases and fellowship programs. These programs are restricted to certain groups, which may violate FCC rules. If the investigation goes ahead, Disney and ABC will join other media and entertainment companies that have faced similar probes from the FCC. These include Paramount Global and Comcast, both of which have been accused of maintaining illegal DEI policies.
During his time as FCC chair, Carr has not hesitated to use his authority to ensure that public airwaves operate in the public interest. He has threatened to revoke broadcast licenses for stations owned by networks that have drawn the president's ire. The outcome of this investigation will be closely watched by those in the media and entertainment industries. It is important to remember that DEI programs are meant to promote fairness and representation. However, they should not be used as a way to discriminate against any group.
