Dissecting the Link: Amino Acids, Genes, and Obesity
IranSaturday, January 11, 2025
Participants were in the 18-60 age range with a mean of around 40 years old. Results showed that in folks with a higher body mass index (BMI), BCAAs might play a tricky role. Overweight-obese patients showed a reverse link between BCAA intake and the FTO gene's action in their subcutaneous fat. In folks who were super obese, though, guzzling more BCAAs appeared to jumpstart the leptin gene in the same type of fat. Leucine and isoleucine, specific BCAAs, got special shout-outs for their role here.
These tidbits suggest that what we eat—particularly the amino acids—could sway gene actions in our fat tissues, affecting pathways linked to obesity. It’s pretty nifty stuff! Not surprisingly, experts want more research to double-check these findings and explore if tweaking dietary amino acids might help in grappling with obesity.
