Domestic Abuse in Saudi Arabia: How Support Systems Impact Victims’ Mental Health

Intimate partner violence, or IPV, is a serious issue globally, affecting women’s physical, mental, sexual, and financial well-being. In more conservative societies like Saudi Arabia (SA), the problem is particularly prevalent. While there’s been limited research on how social support influences IPV in SA, this study focused on understanding IPV victimization and its impact on the mental health of abused women in SA. The research also explored how social support might change these women's experiences. One of the key findings was that IPV doesn't just leave physical scars; it also takes a heavy toll on mental health. Women who experienced IPV often suffered from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This highlights the urgent need for mental health support tailored to IPV victims.

Moreover, the study revealed that women who had strong social support networks tended to cope better with the abuse. This social support could come from family, friends, or community services. It's crucial to foster a supportive environment where victims feel safe to seek help. Overall, the research emphasized that addressing IPV victimization isn’t just about stopping the abuse; it’s also about providing the necessary psychological support and promoting a supportive community. This approach could significantly improve the lives of abused women in SA.
