Imagine balancing caring for your kids and your aging parents at the same time. This is the reality for many adults today, and it's taking a significant toll on their mental and physical health. A recent study found that these "sandwich carers" are more likely to experience declines in their well-being over time. The research, published in the journal Public Health, highlighted that the more hours sandwich carers spend providing care, the greater the impact on their health. Lead researcher Baowen Xue, from University College London, stressed the importance of recognizing and supporting these carers. The study compared mental and physical health scores of around 2, 000 sandwich carers with another 2, 000 adults who only cared for children. It showed that psychological distress increased significantly for sandwich carers, especially those spending over 20 hours a week on care. Their physical health also declined faster. The emotional burden of watching loved ones grow more infirm adds to their stress. The study suggests the need for targeted mental health interventions and health monitoring, especially for those providing intensive care. Future research should explore how social support, respite care, and workplace flexibility can help these carers.
