Drinking Water: Are Forever Chemicals Putting Us at Risk?
Friday, February 7, 2025
This makes PFAS a real worry. PFAS have been part of our lives since the 1940s.
PFAS are found in a lot of things, from plastic water bottles to firefighting foams and waterproof clothing.
The problem is that these chemicals can get into our bodies through what we eat and drink.
The study also looked at a specific PFAS chemical called PFBS.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thinks PFBS is less harmful than another PFAS chemical, PFOA. But this study shows that PFBS might still be risky, especially for mouth and throat cancers.
The damage PFAS cause to human tissue is serious, even in small amounts. Oxidative damage is a key factor in how PFAS might lead to cancers in organs like the thyroid and digestive system.
The kidneys are especially at risk with prolonged exposure.
The study mainly looked at what happens naturally, but it’s clear that we need to do something now.
These chemicals have been around for a while, and their effects are far from harmless. Stricter rules and safer alternatives are needed to solve this issue.
