Drones Set to Take Flight: Navy's Plan Gets Green Light

The Navy has made a significant decision. Their new drone squadron, the MQ-25A Stingrays, will be based at Naval Station Norfolk. These drones will support fighter jets by refueling them mid-air and providing surveillance. This marks the first time the East Coast will have such a squadron.

Environmental Clearance

The Navy's environmental assessment revealed no major concerns. As a result, they can proceed without further studies. A draft report was released earlier this year, and a public meeting was held in May. However, only two people provided feedback—a notably low response.

Construction and Timeline

The Navy plans to build new facilities and upgrade existing ones. Construction is set to begin in 2026 and conclude by 2029. The drones and their crew will be fully operational by 2035, making this a long-term project.
