Ebola’s Rising Threat in Africa: A Call for Action

Democratic Republic of CongoTuesday, May 26, 2026

The World Health Organization reports more than 900 suspected cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where the virus originated, and a handful of infections in neighboring Uganda. The death toll now tops 220.

Rising Risk Levels

Africa’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has raised the risk level for 11 countries:

  • South Sudan
  • Rwanda
  • Kenya
  • Zambia
  • Central African Republic
  • Tanzania
  • Ethiopia
  • Angola
  • Congo
  • Burundi
  • Somalia

“We cannot afford to have more Africans dying,” warns Africa CDC’s Director General, Dr. Jean Kaseya. He urges governments and health agencies to intensify prevention, testing, and treatment efforts.

International Response

  • The United States has pledged over $23 million for monitoring, detection, and response in the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan.
  • Washington designated several U.S. airports as special Ebola screening points. Travelers from affected countries must re-enter the United States for observation; non‑U.S. citizens who have recently visited these areas will be denied entry.
  • Dr. Peter Stafford, an American missionary in a Congolese hospital, tested positive last week and was flown to Germany for treatment. He expressed cautious optimism after evacuation.

Expert Insight

Dr. Deborah Birx explained that multiple infection cycles went undetected, causing a sudden spike in confirmed cases. The delayed recognition means many infections were already underway before authorities could respond.

Call to Action

The international community faces a critical choice: strengthen local capacity and contain the virus, or allow it to spread further. Urgent action is needed to prevent more lives from being lost in Africa.
