Education Department's Shrinkage Plan Halted by Judge
Massachusetts, USAThursday, May 22, 2025
The judge found no evidence to support these contradictory positions. There was no proof that the administration was working with Congress to reach a resolution. Instead, the record showed that the RIF had not made the department more efficient but had done the opposite.
The Trump administration had long wanted to reduce the size of the Education Department. Trump had even joked that he hoped the department's head, Linda McMahon, would "put herself out of a job. " In February, the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, cut nearly $1 billion in funding from the Education Department. This cut also ended dozens of contracts and grants related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
After McMahon's confirmation by the Senate in March, she sent a letter to the department titled "Our Department's Final Mission. " In this letter, she stated that Trump had tasked them with eliminating bureaucratic bloat in the department. Trump himself had said in March that he hoped McMahon would be the last secretary of education.
The judge's ruling is a significant setback for the Trump administration's efforts to downsize the Education Department. It also highlights the challenges of balancing administrative and legislative goals.
