Education Levels and Online Risks: A New Look
Digital Dangers Vary by Education Level
Studies of internet use show that people with different schooling levels face varied dangers online.
A large survey in China, covering 2,120 participants, examined three kinds of harm:
- Mental distress
- Health problems
- Social isolation
Results indicate that most users report psychological issues first, then physical risks, while feeling alone online is the least frequent.
Surprisingly, those with higher education report more overall harm. However, people with less schooling are at greater risk in almost every online activity except when searching for information or buying things.
The analysis separates the causes of these gaps. Activities such as:
- Watching videos
- Chatting with friends
- Creating content
- Taking part in online causes
drive the differences in mental and physical harms.
Only regular engagement in online activism explains why less educated users experience more social harm.
These insights underline that digital inequality is not just about access but also about how people use the web and the kinds of dangers they encounter.
