First Round Votes Canceled
Over a quarter of the votes from the first round of Egypt's recent parliamentary elections were canceled due to serious issues during voting.
Election System and Rounds
- Two-Round Process: The elections are being conducted in two rounds.
- Mixed System: The country uses a mixed system with seats for both individual candidates and closed party lists.
- Objective: The goal is to select the final parliament for President Sisi's third term.
Issues Identified by the NEA
The National Elections Authority (NEA) identified problems in 19 out of 70 areas, including:
- Ads too close to polling stations
- Missing vote records
Hazem Badawi, the NEA boss, shared these details in a press conference.
President Sisi's Involvement
President Sisi himself requested the NEA to thoroughly investigate all issues to ensure the elections were fair and reflected the people's true choices.
Government-Supported Party List
One party list, predominantly supporting the government, secured enough votes to win seats in the first round.
Low Voter Turnout
The turnout for the first round was notably low, around 23%.
Upcoming Second Round
The second round of voting is scheduled for next week and will decide the remaining parliament seats.
