Election Day Anxiety: Can Mike Johnson Sabotage Kamala Harris's Victory?
USATuesday, September 17, 2024
Another concern is that Johnson may try to appease Trump and his supporters by vowing to challenge the election results if they go against the GOP. This worry is tempered by the fact that Harris, as vice president, will preside over the certification process. In 2021, Mike Pence continued the count for an opposing party president, and in 2025, Harris would be certifying herself.
The Electoral Count Act was changed in 2022 to require 20% of each chamber to object to the vote count. However, Politico theorized four possible ways that Johnson and Trump supporters could challenge a Harris victory. Johnson could rewrite the century-old rules for the certification process, object to contested blocks of electoral votes, delay the vote count, or challenge the Electoral Count Act.
A Johnson aide dismissed the claims as part of an "alarmist narrative" from Democrats. Despite these assurances, Democratic leaders continue to be vigilant, recognizing the gravity of the situation and the potential consequences of Johnson's actions.
