Elon Musk's Departure: What Lies Ahead for DOGE?
Washington DC, USAFriday, May 30, 2025
Before joining the Trump administration, Musk had ambitious plans to cut the federal budget by $2 trillion. He famously used a chainsaw to symbolize his push for spending cuts. However, his target number was repeatedly revised downward. By the end of the fiscal year in September, he claimed savings of around $150 billion. Reports have found these savings claims to be overstated and inaccurate, reflecting a misunderstanding of the federal budget.
Musk's departure comes at a time when his business empire is facing financial stress, particularly at Tesla. His exit from the government allows him to return to his multiple companies. Musk has already shifted his focus back to Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink. He has also announced plans to reduce his political spending, stating that he has done enough in that arena.
Musk's time in the government has been marked by clashes with traditional Washington practices. His push for short, accomplishment-focused emails was overruled by some cabinet heads. Other DOGE-led changes have likely made the government less efficient. These include the elimination of a tech unit inside the General Services Administration and a return-to-office push that caused shortages of basic supplies.
Musk's departure from the government does not signal the end of DOGE. The department will continue its work, albeit without its most high-profile figure. The future of DOGE remains uncertain, but it will likely continue to face legal challenges and scrutiny over its methods and goals.
