Elon Musk's Mail-In Voting Conundrum: A Tale of Two Elections
CaliforniaSunday, September 15, 2024
But what about the security measures in place to prevent fraud? Studies have repeatedly shown that there's no evidence of widespread voter fraud in the U.S., and examples of fraud involving mail-in or absentee ballots are exceedingly rare. When fraud does occur, prosecutors have successfully brought cases against perpetrators.
Musk's own Super PAC, America PAC, has been encouraging swing state voters to absentee vote with ballots that can be submitted by mail. A mailer from America PAC was distributed in Wisconsin, directing voters to apply for their absentee ballot. In Wisconsin, voters can cast absentee ballots by mailing them in, by bringing them to a county clerk's office, or by bringing them to a polling place.
After moving to Texas, Musk voted by absentee ballot in 2020, but it's unclear whether he mailed the ballot. Musk is now registered to vote in Brownsville, Texas, where his company SpaceX has operations, although he reportedly lived in Austin as of December.
Musk's voting history raises important questions about his values and priorities. Does he prioritize convenience over principle? Is his criticism of mail-in voting driven by a genuine concern for election integrity or a desire to score political points?
