Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Space X, has been reported to be employing a questionable tactic in gathering voter information for his political action committee (PAC), America PAC. According to CNBC political finance reporter Brian Schwartz, the website of America PAC offers a voter registration option, but it seems to be a trap for swing-state voters, potentially aiding Donald Trump's re-election in November. For those who reside outside of swing states, the website appears to be a legitimate voter registration platform. However, for voters living in key battleground states like Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, the registration process takes a darker turn. Instead of being directed to their state's official voter registration page, swing-state voters are led to a lengthy personal information form, prompting them to enter sensitive details such as their home address, cell phone number, and age.

After submitting their information, they receive a 'thank you' message, but they are not registered to vote. Musk's America PAC has already spent over $800,000 since early July on digital ads targeting voters in these key battleground states. These ads, running on Facebook, Instagram, and Google through YouTube, all ask people to register to vote. But the real goal, it seems, is to acquire the data of these voters. Brendan Fischer, who helps lead the campaign finance watchdog Documented, explained that America PAC is focusing on door-to-door canvassing in support of Trump. He added that the voter data gathered through these digital appeals will likely inform America PAC's canvassing and other political activities. This revelation has sparked conversations on Musk's social media site X about the legality of misleading people in this manner. Some have even labeled it as 'voter suppression' and 'billionaire deception'.
