Escondido Faces First Dengue Case: A Local Look

Escondido, a city in San Diego County, California, recently had its first-ever dengue virus case. This news came from the county's health officials, who shared that the virus was acquired locally. The patient, fortunately, has already recovered. Dengue, a virus spread by mosquitoes, can cause symptoms like fever, nausea, rashes, and body aches in about one out of four people who get infected. The reason the virus is especially concerning is that it doesn't travel far from its source, making local control crucial. The county's Vector Control team has been working hard to prevent the virus from spreading. Dr. Mark Beatty, an assistant medical director, emphasized that these mosquitoes love human homes. They particularly like water-holding objects in yards, such as flower pots or pet bowls. Beatty recommended dumping out such items to prevent mosquito breeding.

Interestingly, these mosquitoes are known as ankle biters. To protect against bites, Beatty suggested using permethrin-based repellents on clothing and wearing long sleeves. The dengue virus was detected near Bear Valley Parkway and Glenridge Road. Allison Bray, an environmental health specialist, mentioned that the Vector Control team will be active in the neighborhood over the next few days. They started treatments with backpack applicators on Friday and will continue until Monday. From Tuesday, they will switch to a truck-mounted applicator early in the mornings for three days.
