Ethiopia's Hidden Harvest: The Unsung Heroes of the Fields

In the Wolaita Zone, a study focused on 32 different NUCS. These crops can be a lifesaver during food shortages, especially with climate change making things harder. But there's a catch: these crops are often linked to poverty. This raises a big question: why are these crops seen as less valuable? The study talked to 246 households. It also had focus group discussions and interviews with key people. The findings were eye-opening. About 50% of the people had poor food consumption. 30% were on the borderline, and only 20% had an acceptable level. Things like age, sex, farming experience, household size, and farm size all played a role in how much these crops were produced and consumed. This shows that there are many challenges to using these crops more widely.
