Europe Steps Up: 21 Billion Euros for Ukraine's Defense
Brussels, BelgiumFriday, April 11, 2025
The focus on air defense is a top priority. The UK's defense secretary mentioned that Russian forces have been using glide bombs and drones extensively. This has led to a high number of casualties on the battlefield. The German aid package is particularly focused on artillery. Germany will provide 100, 000 rounds of artillery ammunition, 25 infantry fighting vehicles, 15 battle tanks, 100 ground surveillance radars, and 120 Man-Portable Air Defense Systems. Additionally, Germany will send four IRIS-T air defense systems with 300 missiles to Kyiv. The German defense minister emphasized the importance of a strong military for Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace.
The support comes as defense ministers from 50 nations gathered in Brussels for the 27th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. The US defense secretary joined the meeting remotely, expressing appreciation for the allies' efforts. The gathering underscored the continued commitment of European nations to support Ukraine in the face of ongoing conflict. The ministers acknowledged that there is no sign of the war ending soon, despite previous promises of a ceasefire. This meeting was a critical moment for Europe to reaffirm its support and fill the gaps left by changing priorities in other parts of the world.
