Ex-Gov. Baker Keeps Political Door Open, Focuses on NCAA

Former Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has left the door open for a possible return to politics. Now the president of the NCAA, Baker recently spoke at the UMass Club about his new role. When asked about a potential comeback in politics, he replied that he wouldn't rule anything out. Baker, known for his moderate Republican views, served two successful terms before deciding not to run for a third in early 2023. He was highly popular during his tenure, making him the most well-liked governor in the state’s recorded history.

Throughout his career, Baker has been cautious about national politics. He refused to endorse any presidential candidates in the 2016 and 2020 elections, choosing to leave that part of his ballot blank. Baker’s recent comments at the event hinted at his openness to future political involvement, though he emphasized that he’s currently focused on his NCAA role. He jokingly mentioned his age, saying, "I’m not old enough to run for president, I’m only turning 68 this year." Baker skillfully dodged questions about his voting preferences in the current presidential election, as well as topics like the New England Patriots and the performance of the new governor, Maura Healey. He remained firm in his focus on collegiate sports, indicating that his world currently revolves around the NCAA.
