Excel Gets a New AI Helper for Finance Tasks

USA, RedmondFriday, June 26, 2026

Microsoft has rolled out fresh tools to its Excel Copilot, targeting users who depend on spreadsheets for daily finance tasks. The updates center on three practical areas:

  • Reusable Workflows
  • Direct Links to Trusted Data Sources
  • Transparent Record of AI Edits

1. Reusable “Skills” for Routine Calculations

  • Skill Files: Save a SKILL.md file in OneDrive to program Copilot.
  • Functionality: Automate calculations such as discounted cash flow models or closing books.
  • Pre‑built Options: Choose from built‑in finance skills or create custom ones.
  • Marketplace Expansion: Partners will add ready‑made skills via the Microsoft Marketplace.

2. Expanded Data Connectivity

Copilot can now pull live data directly into a workbook from:

  • CB Insights
  • Daloopa
  • FactSet
  • Morningstar
  • PitchBook
  • S&P Global

This reduces manual copy‑paste work and ensures analyses use up‑to‑date figures. Some connections may need separate subscriptions.

3. Transparent AI Edits with “Plan with Copilot”

  • Planning Stage: The AI lists ranges, formulas, and assumptions it will modify.
  • Show Changes Pane: Clearly separates AI edits from human changes, providing full traceability and building trust in AI‑assisted finance work.

These enhancements aim to streamline financial modeling, improve data accuracy, and increase confidence in AI‑generated spreadsheet content.
