Opinion summarisation is about condensing long texts into shorter versions that keep the main message and opinions intact. But what happens when summaries only reflect the most popular views? That’s what researchers looked into by examining three hotly debated topics related to COVID-19. They found out that when opinions were too similar, summaries didn’t do a good job of showing the full range of views from the original texts. Interestingly, models like BART and ChatGPT seemed to handle this better, capturing diverse opinions more effectively.
This study also considered how closely related opinions are, known as opinion similarity. It turned out that having similar opinions didn’t mean the summaries were properly covering a wide range of views. So, when we’re talking about summarising opinions, it’s not just about what’s popular, but also about making sure diverse voices are heard.
Thinking about it, it’s like trying to summarise what your friends say about a movie. If you only mention what most of them thought, you're missing out on unique perspectives from the minority. To truly get an idea of what everyone thought, you need to include those differing opinions too.
