Exploring Psychedelics in Palliative Care: A New Frontier

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is gaining attention for its potential to help patients with serious illnesses tackle their emotional, spiritual, and existential struggles. This rapid review dives into how PAT is being explored in palliative care. Between January 2021 and July 2024, 34 articles were found, showing that psilocybin is the most studied compound. The studies suggest that PAT, with careful screening and support, can be safe and effective for patients, usually those with cancer.

However, there are challenges to integrating PAT into palliative care systems. More research is needed to ensure safety and effectiveness across diverse populations and settings. Training for providers, clear care delivery systems, and supportive policies are crucial for the future of PAT in palliative care. It's important to remember that many patients don't have access to basic emotional and spiritual care, so introducing PAT must be done thoughtfully.
